The Onvia Government Decision Makers Database provides difficult-to-find contact information for more than 411,000 public sector officials from federal, state, local, education and special purpose governmental units. The data is derived from a number of public and private sources, including federal government statistical agencies and private data vendors. It is then “stitched” together through a proprietary process to paint a unique picture of every government office in the country, encompassing over 87,000 purchasing offices in all. This week, Onvia launched additional contact information for government decision makers from more than 15,000 agencies in the database, comprising an additional 157,000 contacts.

In response to widespread sentiment that to survive the United States needed a stronger federal government, a convention met in Philadelphia in the summer of 1787 and on September 17 adopted the Constitution of the United States. Aside from Article VI, which stated that "no religious Test shall ever be required as Qualification" for federal office holders, the Constitution said little about religion. Its reserve troubled two groups of Americans--those who wanted the new instrument of government to give faith a larger role and those who feared that it would do so. This latter group, worried that the Constitution did not prohibit the kind of state-supported religion that had flourished in some colonies, exerted pressure on the members of the First Federal Congress. In September 1789 the Congress adopted the First Amendment to the Constitution, which, when ratified by the required number of states in December 1791, forbade Congress to make any law "respecting an establishment of religion."

The United States Congress is the legislative branch of the federal government. It is bicameral, comprising the House of Representatives and the Senate. The House of Representatives consists of 435 members, each of whom represents a congressional district and serves for a two-year term. House seats are apportioned among the states by population; in contrast, each state has two Senators, regardless of population. There are a total of 100 senators (as there are currently 50 states), who serve six-year terms (one third of the Senate stands for election every two years). Each congressional chamber (House or Senate) has particular exclusive powers—the Senate must give "advice and consent" to many important Presidential appointments, and the House must introduce any bills for the purpose of raising revenue.

Kenneth T. Gear, director, federal government affairs, will lead operations at the Washington, D.C. office. Gear reports to Russell Davis, national director, legislative affairs, who heads the company's government affairs department.
