Fatal Fury

Compared to its successors, Fatal Fury's graphics aren't that spectacular, and its music doesn't even begin to compare to later SNK fighters, but both elements stand up relatively well. Its background designs are easily among the best in any fighter at the time of its release. Hwa Jai's level is set in Southtown's streets with a deep view of the city in the background. Geese's level is set at the top of Geese Tower with the sky visible through the ceiling in the background. The details throughout the game in general are pretty great, and will change very slightly each round as the game progresses to later periods of the day. The rain in Tung Fu Rue's level, the two level carousel in Raiden's level, the trains in Duck King's level, and the odd references painted on cars in Billy Kane's level are all among the best details in the game.

Fatal Fury is the legendary arcade fighting game developed by SNK for the Neo-Geo game system. If you don't remember much about the Neo-Geo, it was the first gaming system that was so far ahead of the other 16-bit machines at the time, that it could be played at home AND at the arcade. Not only is Fatal Fury SNK's second oldest fighting game (behind Street Smart) but it was ... once a huge rival to Capcom's famous Street Fighter series. The game's plot is based around brothers Terry and Andy Bogard who are fighting in the "King of Fighters" tournament in order to get to Geese Howard and avenge their father's death. This plot along with only three playable characters in the first version of the game was simple, yet good enough for Fatal Fury to gain a following that led to more games and most recently, a number of cool anime flicks.

The first game of the Fatal Fury series allowed players to select one of three characters, Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, and Joe Higashi, as they battled a gauntlet of computer-controlled opponents ending with Billy Kane and Geese Howard. When two players were playing, players had the option of either playing cooperatively against a computer opponent or competitively against each other. This game was later ported to Genesis and SNES by Takara, and included a versus mode that allowed you to play as all of the CPU controlled characters. The Neo Geo AES Version was ported onto the Wii Virtual Console on September 21 in Japan, on October 5th in Europe and Australia, and October 8 in North America.

Despite promises of action-packed adventure, Fatal Fury 3 falls short of expectations. It had a decent start, with Laocorn and his henchmen blasting off a group of archaeologists who had discovered the third fragment, as well as Sulia being surrounded by Laocorn's unearthly masked minions in the arcade. Yet tension dissipated in the midst of all the action. The historical context of Fatal Fury 3 brought about by the missing fragments of the armour should have aroused some interest, but this is undermined by Sulia's long and dreary explanations, and more importantly, the somewhat trite way with which Joe, Andy and Mai conducted their "investigations". Their discoveries came along too easily; there was hardly any real detective work, which dilutes the excitement of watching a mystery being unravelled that was initially promised. Coupled with the flippancy of Mai and Joe despite having a serious task to tackle, the superficiality of it all is palpable.

The Fatal Fury franchise was originally developed by SNK for the Neo-Geo system. It featured a variety of combatants fighting in a 2D background, taking each other on with deadly combos and finishing moves. While the first game launched 15 years ago, it wasn’t until Fatal Fury 2 that the series hit its stride. Since then, more than 11 versions of the game has launched on multiple platforms. The series was spun off into action figures, three anime movies, and many of the characters were eventually featured in dozens of other games as well.

Fatal Fury was SNK's first attempt to ape the success of Capcom's Street Fighter II. The player can choose from one of three characters -- main character Terry Bogard, his brother Andy Bogard, and Thai kickboxer Joe Higashi -- as they battle through the streets of Southtown to face off against the malicious Geese Howard,
