Fat Albert: Fat Alberts

As Fat Albert and his friends stay in the real world too long, they start to fade away. But by then the movie itself seems faded. The film feels muddled and unsure of its audience, as out of its time as Fat Albert and the gang.

Fat Albert and the Gang think school is nothing but a waist of time so they decide to play hookey the next day. Dumb Donald told the gang he was going to school and thought he was joking but got made fun of and kept walking. Fat Albert and his friends had so much playing hookey knowing they wouldn't get caught.Later on that evening the Junkyard Gang met two homeless bums who didn't go to school telling them that if they didn't finish their education you won't be able to read and write letters. The Gang decide to stay in school realizing it's cool.

Fat Albert is a very amusing and very clean family movie. Both children and adults will enjoy the story and characters, which are well defined and very appealing. Kenan Thomas as Fat Albert and the rest of his cartoon gang do a fine job of making a goofy concept seem real.

Regarding sexual immorality, Fat Albert was about as "lite" as lite can be, but it was there. A young teen girl (Lauri) was seen in her underwear as she prepared for bed. The script was written to include attention to the naked human posterior by having one of the characters lose the backside of his pants (unseen).

The first special, "Hey, Hey, Hey - It's Fat Albert," looked totally different from the familiar Filmation style to come. To cut costs, animator Ken Mundie eliminated a couple of steps from the traditional process of animation. Instead of drawing on paper, transferring the images to a cel and then having everything inked and painted, Mundie and his crew drew directly onto cels with grease pencils.

High above Cudjoe Key, bathed in tropical sunlight, Fat Albert floated in the dwindling trade winds. To the north of him, the shallow green water of Florida Bay was slick as a mossy slate roof. On the ocean side of the key, languid blue rollers, reluctant to reach the craggy island, petered out near the reef a quarter mile from shore. It was August, hot, steamy, and very still.
