Fashoda Incident
built 641 days ago
The Fashoda Incident... known as the Fashoda Crisis, was the climatic event caused by years of territorial disputes in Africa, between France and Great Britain. In essence, this European obsession with the African continent began in the 1670s, which ended in partition of the entire continent by 1895. For this reason, the crisis at Fashoda (Kodok) in Egyptian Sudan, on September 18, 1898, proved to be a matter of national honor, with imperialists on both sides figuring out if their dominance of the African continent was at stake.

The 1898 Fashoda Incident was one of the most crucial conflicts on Europe's way of consolidating holdings in the continent. It brought Britain and France to the verge of war but ended in a major strategic victory for Britain, and provided the basis for the 1904 Entente Cordiale between the two rival countries. It stemmed from battles over control of the Nile headwaters, which caused Britain to expand in the Sudan.

Marchand's occupation lead to the Fashoda Incident when British forces under the command of Herbert Kitchener marched up the Nile reclaiming the Sudan. Kitchener reached Fashoda on 11 September 1898, and temporary truce was agreed. On 9 November the new French foreign minister, Théophile Delcassé, ordered Marchand to withdraw in order to avoid further conflict (and the risk of war) between France and Britain.

From the Fashoda incident in 1898 to the current Blair-Jospin 'entente', this book reviews one century of Franco-British relations. Friend or foe? Partner or rival? Model or counter-model? The two countries continually wavered between two extremes. Yet, as this collection of papers show, they have always had more things in common than suspected in the first place, and there has always been a strong case for cooperation.

There were many other incidents too, luckily none with the intensity of the Fashoda incident. After the First World War, even politicians knew that the net value of the colonies was about nil. However, in respect of public opinion, they kept that knowledge to themselves.
