Farscape: Farscape's
built 238 days ago
Farscape-1 is John Crichton's space module that was originally designed to be able to survive high acceleration from a gravitational slingshot about the Earth. Crichton arrived in the Uncharted Territories via this craft, after accidentally traveling through a wormhole from Earth. Though Farscape-1 is considered relatively primitive by the standards of the other races Crichton has encountered, it is somehow able to navigate wormholes where some other, more sophisticated craft, notably Peacekeeper Prowlers, cannot without liquifying passengers.

Farscape is an adventure as broad and weird as the universe – full of strange creatures, bizarre twists, irreverent humor, raucous action, passion, and romance! Produced in Australia by The Jim Henson Company and Hallmark Entertainment, Farscape has been called "The Best Sci-Fi on TV," by TV Guide, and hailed as "TV's Best Space Series" by USA Today. Farscape ... received the Saturn Award for Best Syndicated/Cable Series three years in a row (2001, 2002, 2003).

Farscape discusses science less than crystals, potions, and mysticism. Bonafide science does percolate the grinds of its plotting, but the fantasy element is more prevalent. But, hey, what's wrong with a good science fantasy? Another difficult question, despite universal translators, is where they come up with all these silly bunny schmerps (see the Turkey City Lexicon in the appendix of Paragons), substituting 'microns' for seconds, 'cycles' for years, and I'll save the best for your own discovery (the substitution for a four-letter expletive deleted). The least they could do would be to develop strange usages for strange terminologies in a logical, methodical manner that does not so closely parallel English grammar. Meanwhile, the most difficult question is for the characters: whether they can develop their mostly two dimensional personalities with occasional glimmer of fullness which sadly surpasses the common television standard.

In a lot of ways, Farscape is probably the series TNT wanted Crusade to be. It's action-adventure with a broad appeal. Sure, it's not incredibly smart, but it somehow grows on you. What more, it remains to be seen whether the Sci-Fi Channel wants another spaceship show next to Farscape. Could Farscape turn out to be the Crusade killer?

The Henson cult faves of Fraggle Rock and Farscape have been rescued from nostalgia and added to the modern era of iTunes accessibility. Thanks to a partnership between the Jim Henson Company and New Video, you can now do the "Fraggle Rock Rock" anytime, anywhere (if you dare) starting Jan. 28. For sci-fi fans, all 22 eps of Farscape's first season will be downloadable, as will the first 24 Fraggle shows, for subterranean puppet sing-alongs no strings attached. Anna Dimond read more

One of the stranger results of Farscape's cancellation was that Ben Browder and Claudia Black wound up as major characters in the later seasons of the long running SF series Stargate SG-1. A fantasy sequence in the Stargate episode "200" parodied Farscape, with Black reprising Aeryn, but with Browder playing Stark and other Stargate cast members playing Crichton, Chiana, and D'Argo (Crichton was played by Michael Shanks, due to an in joke with the cast and crew, that Browder and Shanks looked very much the same). This parody poked fun at the cult status of the show and its use of made up alien curse words. Coincidentally, the announcement of Stargate's own cancellation was made immediately after this episode ran.
