Poultry Building, Western Fair 1923. Animals are ‘domesticated’ when their breeding and living conditions are controlled by humans. Over time, the collective behaviour, life cycle, and physiology of livestock have changed radically. Many modern farm animals are unsuited to life in the wild. Goats and sheep were domesticated around 8000 BCE in Asia.
Alisha, the oldest of three sisters who live on Maple Lane Farm, narrates this photo-essay about the day-to-day activities involved in raising pigs. The events surrounding the birth of a litter of pigs is the highlight, with lots of great pictures of the newborn and a careful description of how the babies are cared for in the moments and weeks after birth. Most of the remaining text follows the girls as they do the chores associated with raising pigs. Color photographs capture the spirit and dedication of the three youngsters, whose hard work and willingness to accept responsibility will gain the admiration of readers. Because the family's involvement in pig farming began as a 4-H project for Alisha, Wolfman concludes with a page of information on 4-H.
Sassy and Jake both enjoy running around the farm, chasing rabbits and wild geese out of the fields. When Sassy and Jake are not at the farm, they can probably be found in the house, stretched out and asleep. Jake likes to sleep on the couch during the day and sleeps on his doggie bed at night. Sassy likes to sleep on the back deck in the sunlight during the day, and with Tim, Kristie, or Kellie at night.
As components of the modern factory farming machine, most farm animals live short, miserable lives devoid of meaningful legal protections. Their lot ensures that they are whipped down the assembly line of mass production before being expediently converted into the nuggets, burgers and meaty snacks that fill the nation’s supermarket shelves and fast food outlets.
