The Fantastic Four comic was the first Marvel superhero comic, one of the key events that historians point to as marking the beginning of the Silver Age of Comics. From the first one hundred issues of this comic have come some of the most memorable characters and supporting cast, many of which have formed the foundation of the Marvel Comics mythology. Memorable and celebrated characters such as Doctor Doom, the Watcher, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, the Inhumans, the Skrulls, the Kree, the Black Panther, and Annihilus were all created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as supporting characters or adversaries in the Fantastic Four. Stan Lee's characteristic over-the-top billing of the book as "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" was, perhaps, a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether or not the series was the best selling at the time, it certainly felt like the "greatest". In many ways, this book, along with The Amazing Spider-Man, set the tone for the enduring Marvel Universe.

Mr. Fantastic has, out of loneliness, invented for himself a fictionary, invisible childhod friend called Susan Storm... known as the Invisible Circle. Accidently made real due the michevous meddlings of the villainous Polygon Man, she is now married to Mr. Fantastic. She in turn has a younger brother called Johnny Storm, the Human Triangle. Mr. Fantastic is also best friend with Ben Grimm (aka "the Line" due to his narrowmindness), the long lost third Grimm brother who was always too asymmetric to be seen with his two elder, more aesthetically aligned brothers. It is believed by some that were Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Circle ever to have an offspring, it would result in the birth of the Ultimate Hectagon, a being of immense power that might one day rival that of the Elastials and possibly even Emperor Galactus himself. It will never be possible for him to wear a wristwatch because of his form.

Players can become comic book heroes as they follow a storyline inspired by the film Fantastic Four. They can join the famous family of Super Hero crime fighters and play as any of the Fantastic Four characters: the Invisible Woman, The Thing, Human Torch, or Mr. Fantastic. Each character in the game has his or her own signature powers that must be used to overcome the intense challenge of defeating the disreputable Dr. Doom. In one scene, players become Mr. Fantastic and have to solve tricky puzzles while rolled into a ball; in another, players battle the forces of evil as Human Torch, flying around to avoid water cascading from the ceiling.

Much like a microcosm of the super hero community, the super-powered Fantastic family was torn apart by the superhuman Civil War. Following the war, Reed and Sue set off to mend their troubled marriage while Johnny and Ben teamed up with newly-wed Storm and Black Panther, creating a new Fantastic Four.
