Fantastic Four

The Fantastic Four comic was the first Marvel superhero comic, one of the key events that historians point to as marking the beginning of the Silver Age of Comics. From the first one hundred issues of this comic have come some of the most memorable characters and supporting cast, many of which have formed the foundation of the Marvel Comics mythology. Memorable and celebrated characters such as Doctor Doom, the Watcher, Galactus, the Silver Surfer, the Inhumans, the Skrulls, the Kree, the Black Panther, and Annihilus were all created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as supporting characters or adversaries in the Fantastic Four. Stan Lee's characteristic over-the-top billing of the book as "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine" was, perhaps, a self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether or not the series was the best selling at the time, it certainly felt like the "greatest". In many ways, this book, along with The Amazing Spider-Man, set the tone for the enduring Marvel Universe.

The Fantastic Four is a team of four and a half fictional superheroes in the Marble Universe. The world's greatest numerical superheroes, the Fantastic Four is an inspiration to mathematicians everywhere. The team's leader is Reed Richards, Mr. Fantastic (love-child of Cliff Richards and a fraction), whose foursome nature eventually gave the team its name. Originally an innocent two who spent his days in high-school textbooks, he was bitten by a radioactive square that caused him to multiply into himself, and transformed into the most powerful integer in the Universe. Attempts to create a secret identity as Foursh Fourterson were rumbled by his bulging decimal point and muscular angles, and before long the Fantastic Four became media stars, regularly making front page news as they saved the world from terror, misery, and The Reinman Hypothesis. Nowadays, Mr. Fantastic is ... a vice-secretary of the United Nations, where he represents Lichtenstien.

The Fantastic Four has had several different headquarters, most notably the Baxter Building in New York City. The Baxter Building was replaced by Four Freedoms Plaza, built at the same location, after the Baxter Building's destruction at the hands of Kristoff Vernard, adopted son (and rumored half-brother of Mr. Fantastic) of the Fantastic Four's seminal villain Doctor Doom. Pier 4, a warehouse on the New York waterfront, served as a temporary headquarters for the group after Four Freedoms Plaza was condemned, due to the actions of another superhero team, the Thunderbolts.

The Fantastic Four is formed when during an outer space test flight in an experimental rocket ship, the four protagonists are bombarded by a storm of cosmic rays. Upon crash landing back on Earth, the four astronauts find themselves transformed with bizarre new abilities. The four then decide to use their powers for good as superheroes. In a significant departure from preceding superhero conventions, the Fantastic Four make no effort to maintain secret identities as they maintain a high public profile, enjoying celebrity status for scientific and heroic contributions to society. At the same time they are often prone to arguing and even fighting with one another. Despite their bickering, the Fantastic Four consistently prove themselves to be "a cohesive and formidable team in times of crisis."[11]
