Fanny Kemble: Charles Kemble
built 641 days ago
December, 1834: British actor Fanny Kemble describes her recent tour to Canada. In 1833 British diva Fanny Kemble toured Canada with her father Charles Kemble. Miss Kemble went to Montreal and to Quebec City. In an hilarious letter to another actor considering such a tour (Charles Mathews), Miss Kemble vents her spleen.
When recurring economic woes and ill health caused Charles Kemble to be replaced as director of the Covent in 1832, the Kemble family's long-time ties to the Theater were severed. They embarked on a two-year theatrical tour of America, where Fanny's debut at New York's Park Theater was critically acclaimed. The New York Mirror declared "a new era in American history began with Kemble's visit."
Frances Anne Kemble was the daughter of actor Charles Kemble and Marie-Thérèse de Camp. She was educated in Paris and made her debut as Julia (while her father played Mercutio) on October 5, 1829 at the Covent Garden Theatre in London.
