Famvir is an antiviral used in the treatment of shingles or in certain cases, genital herpes. When you take Famvir, it is absorbed into your bloodstream, and then converted into another drug called penciclovir. A virus infects the cells and begins to multiply over and over again, making new viruses. Penciclovir stops the herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 from multiplying, which may reduce the symptoms of the outbreak and helps sores to heal faster.

Famvir received FDA clearance for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes in December 1995. Famvir has been marketed in the United Kingdom for the treatment of first episode and recurrent genital herpes since April 1995. It is currently approved in nearly 40 countries for the treatment of acute shingles (herpes zoster) and was cleared for marketing in the U.S. in June 1994. As with other antivirals, Famvir does not reduce the incidence of post-herpetic neuralgia. However, Famvir was proven to reduce the duration of post-herpetic neuralgia, the chronic, often debilitating pain that persists after shingles lesions have healed. Famvir ... is being studied for a number of other herpesvirus infections.

Take Famvir only with the instructions provided by your doctor. Any question on your medication should be discussed with your doctor or pharmacist. Begin using the medication when the first symptoms of shingles or herpes infections occur, such as burning, blisters, or pain. Drink a full glass of water with each Famvir dose. You may choose whether or not to eat as well, but if you tend to get an upset stomach, eating may help minimize that. Continue to take Famvir as long as your doctor has recommended it, in order to ensure complete healing of your herpes infection, shingles, or chicken pox.
