Militarily the Falklands War was important because it was one of the few naval battles so far to have occurred after the end of World War II. The Falklands War illustrated the vulnerability of surface ships to both missiles and submarines. It vindicated the UK decision to develop the VTOL Harrier aircraft, that showed its capability of operating from forward bases with no runways.

A man accused of being a Nazi concentration camp guard during World War II says he should not be deported because he could face torture in his native Ukraine. The US first tried to deport Demjanjuk in 1977, accusing him of being a notorious guard known as Ivan the Terrible at the Treblinka. Demjanjuk was extradited to Israel, convicted and sentenced to hang. But Court found that someone else was that guard. Demjanjuk returned home and his citizenship was restored. The current case, which led courts to again strip his citizenship, is based on evidence alleging he was a different guard.

During World War II, Arthur Levenson worked on efforts that ultimately led to the solving of the code of Germany's Enigma machine. As a member of the Army Signal Corps in 1943, he was assigned as a cryptanalyst to the British code-breaking team at Bletchley Park outside London. He worked on efforts that ultimately led to the solving of the mathematical code of Germany's Enigma machine, which created secret messages for Nazi military leaders. In a 1999 PBS documentary about the decoding project, Mr. Levenson said the team at Bletchley sometimes deciphered the German messages before German forces in the field could read them. In one case, Mr. Levenson said, the team decoded a message from German military leader Erwin Rommel and determined that German tanks were converging at a spot in Normandy where U.S. paratroopers were planning to jump. At the last moment, plans were changed, and the paratroopers averted disaster.
