Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists picked their way through nearly 1,500 cubic feet of soil this past week, exposing parts of the historic English fort that have not been seen since slaves transformed the site into a Confederate earthwork during the Civil War. The newly uncovered landscape includes evidence of several early fort-period features, including postholes and a possible grave shaft. But far more prominent and still growing is a large, artifact-filled boundary ditch that dates to the last half of the 1600s.

A plan by China to honour "the good Nazi", a German who helped to save hundreds of thousands of civilians from Japanese troops, has reopened a dispute with Tokyo over its lack of atonement for the Second World War. The Chinese authorities are drawing up plans for a museum dedicated to the memory of John Rabe, who defied the "Rape of Nanking" - a six-week massacre during which an estimated 300,000 Chinese were slaughtered by Japanese soldiers.

Videla was succeeded in March 1981 by General Roberto Viola, who, with the Dirty War near its end, was quite unable to control his military allies. In December he was shouldered aside by Lieutenant General Leopoldo Galtieri. Galtieri faced a slumping economy and increased civil opposition to military rule.
