Fairy Tales: Stories
built 655 days ago
Like fairy tales for children, many Hollywood remakes offer timeless, ageless stories with a modern twist, but some moviegoers don't even know they're remakes, according to a recent survey by Blockbuster Online. In the survey, 38 percent of respondents did not know "The Mummy" (1999) was a remake of the 1932 Boris Karloff classic "The Mummy."
This list of fairy tales gives the estimated reading time for each tale, origin of the tale, reader age range, and a summary of the story. The tales are accompanied by children's drawings.

The last fairy tale to be analyzed is "The Frog King". In this story, though the princess has promised an ugly frog that she would be with him forever in order to earn his favor, she breaks her promise later. Her father, the king, forces her to keep the promise and she is compelled to obey the order. She hates and is disgusted by the frog so much that she throws him at the door. A miracle abruptly happens then. The frog changes back to a handsome prince again and he finally marries the princess. The lessons behind this story are apparent: one should not evaluate others by appearance, and one should keep his or her promise.

The story of Cinderella is recounted in many cultures and remains one of the most archetypical of fairy tales. This web page is a "text and image archive containing a dozen English versions of the fairy tale. The Cinderellas presented here represent some of the more common varieties of the tale from the English-speaking world in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries."

Each group will place an X in the fairy tales database identifying themes in their particular story. (See sample MS Excel file, Fairy Tale Themes Database). Note: The database could be set up on one computer either in the classroom or on multiple computers in a lab for students to access as they finish reading.
No single person can be called responsible for a fairy tale. Someone may be credited by virtue of being the first to write a story down, but the chances are they did not create it from scratch. Charles Perrault, Hans Christian Anderson, and the Grimm Brothers are examples of this phenomenon.
