Westmark Fairbanks: The newest, largest downtown Fairbanks hotel is the Westmark Fairbanks. Owned by the cruise line Holland America , the Westmark features a contemporary look and feel, along with spacious rooms and two restaurants.

Before Fairbanks was founded, Koyukon Athabaskans lived, fished, and hunted along the shores of the Tanana River for thousands of years. The Tanana and other rivers ... served as trade routes with other Athabaskans and Inuit.
In less than 30 years, the three Fairbanks brothers had hired more than 1,000 workers to supply the demand for Fairbanks products. The workforce now included salesmen and agents who combed the marketplace with drawings and watercolors of the scales. The modest one-building operation would eventually grow to 40 buildings with more than 20 acres of floor space within the next 50 years.

Fairbanks has an unique architectural history. Building styles developed far away from those of the rest of the United States, but elements of popular styles from the Lower 49 are evident in many buildings.

The Interior, home of Fairbanks and Denali National Park, has some of the most extreme weather in the world with rapid temperature swings, thunderstorms with hail and lightning and snow in the summer. Winters are very long, lasting from mid-October to mid-April. They are very cold and dry, with temperatures sometimes dipping down to -65 °F (-54 °C). Often the temperature is below zero Fahrenheit (-17.8 °C) for entire months. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Fairbanks was -66 °F (-54.4 °C) on January 14, 1934.
LaVelle Young Sternwheeler In 1902, a year later, word of the gold in creeks around Fairbanks started a stampede. Felix Pedro is credited with that discovery. It was only the first explosion in a long history of booms and busts in Fairbanks. Gold-seekers poured in and threw up homes and businesses.
