The waters of the Chena River overflowed in 1967, flooding Fairbanks. The disaster, in some ways, was an economic boon. Federal aid helped businesses rebuild and residents received low-interest financing to restore their homes or build new ones. Many homeowners found themselves with better furnishings than they had before the flood!
Chena Hot Springs Resort is located sixty miles outside of Fairbanks. Along your way out to Chena Hot Springs you have a very good chance of seeing moose and other wildlife. Once you arrive at the resort you have a variety of things you can do. The swimming area includes an indoor pool, three indoor hot tubs, an outdoor rock pool, and two outdoor hot tubs all using water from the hot springs. Enjoy relaxing in the rock pool under twenty-four hour daylight! Another must do while visiting Chena Hot Springs is the Aurora Ice Museum.

Fifteen circulating pump stations distribute treated water throughout the greater Fairbanks area. City water, sewer and electric systems are operated by a private company. The Chena power site has four steam turbines fueled by coal, and one oil-fueled electrical generator.
The Bridgewater Hotel sits in the heart of downtown Fairbanks, overlooking the Chena River. The property blends the atmosphere of an intimate, European inn with the amenities of a much larger hotel.
