Fairbanks has most of the amenities of a large city without the frenetic pace and overcrowding. Crisp, clean air, beautiful surroundings, friendly neighbors, good schools, proximity to the flagship campus of the University of Alaska and plenty of indoor and outdoor activities make Fairbanks the best place in the world to live, work and raise a family.
Photo of Fairbanks, Alaska Fairbanks has more to offer the visitor than the Fred Meyer farthest north. The old downtown is pleasant and easily explored on foot. Home to the University of Alaska, the associated museum has an extensive display of artifacts that explore Alaska's history. If Fairbanks is your last stop before heading back to the Lower 48 and you still haven't seen a bear, the museum has a very big one on display, dead of course. Check out the Ice Museum if you want to view the creation of icy sculpture, or visit Creamer's Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge on the outskirts of the city for migratory bird viewing.

Fairbanks statue Fairbanks and Interior Alaska put nature and industry on display. Expect to see museums, the trans-Alaska oil pipeline, riverboats and, if you're lucky, Denali. The 20,320-foot peak is visible from Fairbanks on clear days. The northern lights are not visible in summer.
