Failure
built 656 days ago
Failure to thrive is a condition commonly seen by primary care physicians. Prompt diagnosis and intervention are important for preventing malnutrition and developmental sequelae. Medical and social factors often contribute to failure to thrive. Either extreme of parental attention (neglect or hypervigilance) can lead to failure to thrive. About 25 percent of normal infants will shift to a lower growth percentile in the first two years of life and then follow that percentile; this should not be diagnosed as failure to thrive. Infants with Down syndrome, intrauterine growth retardation, or premature birth follow different growth patterns than normal infants.

Failure is a learning tool. Thomas Edison failed a thousand times before he invented the light bulb. Failure is trying to do things others have not considered. It is a temporary byproduct of creativity. It is challenging the learning process. It is experiential education at work.

If you are a big fan of Failure or Ken Andrews, Golden is a must have. The highlight was hearing about the history of the band via a commentary by the two geniuses behind the band, collaborating on something for the first time in almost 10 years. Also on the dvd is the way cool video for "Stuck on You". The cd has a bunch of demos that are really cool to listen to and a highlight of that disc is "Wake Up" and outtake from the masterpiece "Fantastic Planet". Do yourself a favor and pick this up!

Close to ten years after their demise, Failure continues to inspire and transform those who hear their music. When active, the group was a well guarded secret to their fans that occasionally hit mainstream radar while touring with Tool, or on Lollapalooza. Musically, they were so ahead of their time that only now is the band beginning to receive proper acclaim for their sonic approach. In the last few years, Failure has been name-checked as an influence by such groups as Cave In, Hopesfall, Finch, The Deftones, Thursday and more. Ken Andrews (vocals, guitar, producer), Greg Edwards (bass, guitar) along with either Bob Gauss or Kelli Scott on drums created pop melodies wrapped in arrangements that were as crushingly heavy as any hardcore band or as transcendently space-like as any opus by Hawkwind, Radiohead and mid-era Floyd. Their watermark and final album, 'Fantastic Planet' (Warner Brothers), achieves long waves of cinematic sound and epic production, but at its center remains the cornerstone of good radio, driving melodies and addictively catchy riffs.

In 1992, Failure signed with Slash Records (an LA-based independent label whose releases were manufactured and distributed by Warner Bros. in the United States), and went to Minnesota to record their debut album with notorious producer Steve Albini at Pachyderm Studio that summer. Comfort was released in September 1992, and around this same time, they went on their first of several tours with Tool.

Failure to thrive is diagnosed when a child's growth rate drops below the 5th percentile for his age, or falls by two major percentiles on his growth chart. What does this mean? If your child is at the 5th percentile, it means that 95 percent of children his age weigh more than him, and only 5 percent weigh less.
