"Facial lipoatrophy is a condition that results in loss of fat in the cheeks, temples and eye sockets. The sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, indentations and wrinkling may make a person appear exhausted and unhealthy," said Dr. Sharon Levy, senior director of Scientific & Medical Affairs for Dermik Laboratories. "Lipoatrophy can result from anti-retroviral therapy in people with HIV and can have a devastating effect on self-image and confidence. The effects can be so severe that patients may even jeopardize their health by discontinuing their anti-retroviral treatment."

The newest treatment, The Village Body Cocoon and Facial Treatment is the ultimate spa extravagance, starting with a full-body gentle exfoliating mask, which is removed with steamed towels, followed by an application of emollient rich body butter. A soft heated blanket creates a cocoon of warmth and enables deep moisturizing, while a complete customized facial is then performed. The treatment is sure to promote deep relaxation, as well as soft, glowing skin. The price is $135 for a 90 minute treatment, and includes full use of the Village Health Club the day of the treatment.

Fortunately, the facial nerve will grow through a segment of another nerve (taken from another part of the patient's body) if the damaged nerve is carefully sutured to the new nerve segment. The regrowth may take a long time and may be incomplete, but the result is often an acceptable movement of facial muscles. The nerve segment that is used to provide length in this instance may come from areas in the neck, in the arm or in the leg. In each case, sensation is lost to that small part of the body to repair the damaged facial nerve. This treatment method may be used to repair the main stalk of the facial nerve or its branches.
