Fable: Combat
built 197 days ago
Fable eschews the more traditional turn-based, menu-driven combat in favor of some good old-fashioned hands-on sword slinging. There's three types of attacks in Fable - melee, magic, and archery, and you can switch between them literally on the fly, thanks to a very intuitive and smooth set of controls. You can creep up on a group of targets, carefully take aim and maybe eliminate one or two with arrow strikes, then, as they rush at you, unleash a hail of fireballs or lightning on them, and finally, finish off the stragglers with a few slashes from a broadsword - and you can do all this, including flipping through your entire inventory of spells - without navigating through a single menu: it's all done in real-time.

Adalric agreed to train Fable, and her first lesson involved training in lightsaber combat. The training consisted of a series of cadences in which one manipulated small ball bearings placed atop tall candle wicks. This technique had been developed by Vo'ren Faalo, and Fable initially excelled at the exercise. Unfortunately, when Adalric upped the difficulty level, Fable faltered and was unable to perform the exercise. Adalric became furious with Fable, ridiculing her for her weaknesses and inability to perform up to his standards.

Peter Molyneux has simplified combat to just one button in Fable 2, hopefully enticing casual gamers to play while still rewarding hardcore gamers with upgrades based upon the use of advanced maneuvers in the system. But either way, Molyneux wants players beating the game.
