Fabiola Zuluaga: Kim Clijsters
built 491 days ago
Zuluaga finished 2000 at No.42 in the world before a right shoulder surgery took her off the Tour for most of 2001. She made an impressive comeback at her beloved Bogotá in 2002 as a wildcard ranked No.285, cruising to the title and continuing a surge that led to the best season of her career in 2004, which was highlighted by the aforementioned Australian Open semifinal. She represented her country in two Olympics - Sydney and Athens - and seven times in Fed Cup between 1995 and 2003. Her best singles ranking of No.16 came on January 17, 2005, with a full 12 months of solid tennis built on the Melbourne semifinal. She played her last match in New York, falling to Clijsters in the aforementioned second round encounter. She married Julian García at the end of 2004.

Zuluaga retired from professional tennis on September 9, 2005, shortly after giving eventual champion Kim Clijsters a battle at the 2005 US Open in New York. The 27-year-old Bogotá resident left the sport to devote more time to her personal life after 17 years of tennis. Donning a shirt that read "Gracias Colsanitas" ("Thank You Colsanitas"), Zuluaga was given a gift from the tournament, presented to her by Colsanitas President Roberto Cocheteux, and then made an emotional speech to officially close the book on her career.
Fourth seed Kim Clijsters overcame an alarming first-set slump to beat Fabiola Zuluaga 7-5 6-0 in the second round of the US Open on Wednesday. In a windy Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Belgian let an early 4-0 lead slip with the loss of five straight games and faced a set point in game 10.
Zuluaga gave eventual champion Kim Clijsters a tough match in the second round of last year’s Pacific Life Open before falling, 6-3, 7-5, to the Belgian. Zuluaga, who reached the semifinals at this year’s Australian Open, is ranked 25th in the world and is looking to make a strong run at the women’s title this year.
Not merely that her winning the final match, 1-6, 6-4, 12-10, was that far removed from losing in the first round here last year -- to fabulous Fabiola Zuluaga. Clijsters ... had been dropped in her opener last year.
