Zuluaga arrived for the Australian Open ranked 36th and without major ambitions. But Tuesday she advanced to the semifinals when Amelie Mauresmo pulled out shortly before the match because of a back injury.

The practice paid off for Zuluaga when she arrived in Melbourne for the Australian Open. She faced Japan’s Shinobu Asagoe in the first round. Asagoe had easily defeated Zuluaga the week before in a small warm-up in Hobart, Australia.

"Venus looked a little more agitated in the second set," said Zuluaga, an Australian Open semifinalist. "She went to change rackets because of a 'problem' with her strings, but I think she wanted to catch her breath."
