F. Gary Gray: Cool
built 287 days ago
Steven attended the premiere in Los Angeles for the West Coast premiere of F.Gary Gray's "Be Cool," with his son Taj. The film is the highly anticipated sequel to "Get Shorty," bringing back hit man Chili Palmer (played by John Travolta) and starring Uma Thurman, The Rock, Harvey Keitel, Vince Vaughn, Danny DeVito and Andre Benjamin. In "Be Cool," Chili moves his strong-arm tactics from the movie business to the music industry. Steven Tyler plays himself, helping Chili break a promising young pop star (played by Christina Milian). The film is slated to open in theatres nationwide on March 4, 2005.
''Get Shorty" was released a few months after Gray's easygoing porchbound comedy ''Friday," which had only a handful of characters and low-key energy. Gray now seems indifferent to such patient style. He's more comfortable muscling his way through action sequences in a movie like ''The Italian Job." For him, the joke in ''Be Cool" is not on the page, it's in the casting, and that turns laborious fast.

After debuting with the sleeper hit comedy Friday in 1995, 34-year-old Gray moved onto the feminist caper movie Set It Off, suspense thriller The Negotiator and the surprisingly decent remake of The Italian Job. Next on his CV is Be Cool, set a decade after Get Shorty it follows the adventures of former loan shark turned movie producer Chili Palmer in the music industry.

"It's not a remake, it's [an] homage to the original," explained Gray, whose credits ... include the soon-to-be-released Vin Diesel vehicle "A Man Apart." "I think the only similarity is that we use the Minis and that it's a gold heist. It's a great heist movie. It's very sexy, it's very cool, it's very clever, and the cast is amazing. It's a director's dream to work with a cast like that.
Gray was seen on the MTV show Punk'd when The Rock was the subject of a practical joke on the set of his movie "Be Cool." Gray and his Be Cool cast members (mostly uncredited) greeted The Rock after it had been revealed to him that he had just been "Punk'd."
