Eyes

Eyes are organs that detect light. Different kinds of light-sensitive organs are found in a variety of animals. The simplest eyes do nothing but detect whether the surroundings are light or dark, which is sufficient for the entrainment of circadian rhythms but can hardly be called vision. More complex eyes can distinguish shapes and colors. The visual fields of some such complex eyes largely overlap, to allow better depth perception (binocular vision), as in humans; and others are placed so as to minimize the overlap, such as in rabbits and chameleons.

Eyes have long been an important part of the Muppet aesthetic. For example, one of the most distinctive aspects of Kermit the Frog is his eyes, originally made from ping-pong ball halves and with unique cross-lined pupils.

Eyes have a special shape that makes light rays focus on the back part of the eye, called the retina. There (at least) three types of light-sensitive cells in the retina. Two of them, rods and cones, allow sight (seeing) by sending signals through the optic nerve to the brain. The third type senses light for a different purpose than seeing. Some special ganglion cells in the retina send their information about light to the brain along a different path than the optic nerve. This information adjusts (synchronizes) the individual's circadian rhythm to nature's light/dark cycle.

Eyes of animals have f-numbers too. It is known that nocturnal animals (night dwellers) have low f-numbers of about f/1.0, whereas diurnal animals (day dwellers) have relatively high f-numbers exceeding f/2.0. This is hardly surprising since nocturnal animals can use ability to collect extra light to enhance their vision.

"Eyes of America" is dedicated to missing and abducted children everywhere. In partnership with Child Watch of North America, KidSational, Inc. www.kidsationalinc.com)"> and Starpower Productions, plans are underway to produce a DVD movie that anyone will be able to download at no cost. This DVD will ... be donated to schools. Vicki Rios-Martinez and her husband Junny have agreed to be part of the movie that is designed to heighten awareness of this grave national problem among parents and children. "Eyes of America" is part of an organization that is asking the millions of truckers across the country to be the eyes and ears of missing and abducted children. This effort will be launched officially in April when the first of many concerts will be held in Orlando.

"The Eyes of Christmas" benefits RP International, the nation's leading non-profit fighting RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa) and other degenerative eye diseases. Founder Helen Harris ... encourages sighted viewers to tune into "The Eyes of Christmas" broadcast to take the "traveling eye test," which enables early diagnosis and treatment of disorders. This year's telecast celebrates amazing, breakthroughs in genetic and cell-transplant therapies, which hold great promise of restoring vision to victims of degenerative eye diseases. This is "the greatest Christmas gift of all," says Harris.
