UFO: Extraterrestrials is set in 2025 on the newly colonized planet Esperanza, where mankind's foray into outer space has a meeting with alien life. However, these extraterrestrials aren' t just interested in contact; they' re out for blood and riches. In defense of their fledgling outer space outpost, the player is summoned by the Esperanza government to face this threat from deep space.

Gameplay in UFO: Extraterrestrials is similar to the original X-COM games. The player starts out with a base where they can add buildings, allocate scientists, equip soldiers, and vehicles, manufacture equipment, etc. Additional bases can be bought in different countries but they are used mainly for housing interceptors. Most buildings cannot be built in bases other than your main base.

UFO: Extraterrestrials is a futuristic real-time/turn-based strategy blend set on the fictional planet of Esperanza in 2025. Having made a bloody first contact with a strange form of life from another planet, the player is thrust into the tough position of leading the defense of this isolated planet against the never-ending assault of these hostile invaders. To accomplish this, the player will have at their disposal squads of soldiers, light and heavy support combat vehicles, robots and air units located in bases throughout the Esperanza.

Fear not... as to give these alien menaces what they deserve the player will have tough squads of soldiers, light and heavy support combat vehicles, robots and air units located in bases throughout the Esperanza. Only through controlling the skies with intense real-time fighter-to-fighter combat and utilizing tactical-level factors like terrain and cover will the player win fierce battles and, eventually, the war against the immutable malevolence that is this alien onslaught!

The UFO: Extraterrestrials story takes place on a colonized planet named Esperanza where scientists are alarmed to detect a UFO (who would have guessed it!) which has crash-landed on a nearby planet. Upon investigation, records are found that indicate these aliens have invaded Earth and enslaved the populace. In an effort to combat the expected alien invasion a team is formed named the Counter Alien Force or CAF and it is your job to lead this force.
