Exorcism
built 200 days ago
Exorcism is the rite of driving out demons. Baptism is the first rite of exorcism-casting out the demons with holy water-and has been done throughout the ages. During the Golden Age of Reformation the Catholic Church used exorcism to demonstrate its superiority over the newer protestant religions. But " exorcism is not peculiar to Catholicism, " says Douglas Raybeck, professor of anthropology, Hamilton College, who notes that about 50 percent of the world' s cultures believe a person can be taken over by the supernatural.

Exorcism/Aesthetic Terrorism is an international manifestation of contemporary art, organised by the Rotterdam City Collection. It comprises a group exhibition, a catalogue and a poster presentation and encompasses the expansion of Rotterdam artists in competition with the work of colleagues world-wide. The trial of strength of these kindred spirits is transformed into a concentration of strength: a shared seizure of power that is as exciting as it is terrifying, leading the public along like moths to the flame. With the voluptuous cadavers of Karin Arink, the caged nightmares of Louise Bourgeois and the Fresh Human Hairballs of Aloysius Donia, the arms of Atelier Van Lieshout, the tanned warriors of Matthew Monahan, the raw women of Charlotte Schleiffert, the wicked fairy of Pipilotti Rist and the hellish supplications that Bruce Nauman hurls at visitors in a deafening audiovisual spectacle, the exhibition establishes an aesthetic reign of terror that ... revives the public with a burst of horrified laughter.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose has more in common with TV’s Law & Order. That’s not necessarily a bad thing — in fact, the movie is a sufficiently interesting mix of courtroom drama, horror, mystery, and biopic. While the square pegs don’t always fit into the round holes, writer/director Scott Derrickson should be commended for trying something a little different in the current cinematic sea of bigger and bloodier horror remakes.

Curiously, The Exorcism of Emily Rose is not really about an exorcism at all. It isn't even a horror film. It is, in fact, a drawn-out, courtroom "thinker" chronicling the trial of Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson), whose attempt to perform the religious ritual of exorcism leaves the possessed, the young Emily Rose, dead. Laura Linney steps in as Erin Bruner, a teeth-gnashing DA with a heart of ice, the better to keep her daily alcohol intake chilled while defending the sleaziest of sleazes. But when she realizes that she must step outside of her usual realm of fact-based reasoning in order to unravel Father Moore's prime defense, the audience realizes that $8.50 is a lot of money.

In the 2005 film, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, only one of the characters, Father Richard Moore (Tom Wilkinson), was found guilty of negligent homicide surrounding the death of Emily Rose. In the real-life case of Anneliese Michel (pictured right), which took place in 1978, there were four defendants, not just one. They were Father Arnold Renz, Pastor Ernst Alt, and Anneliese Michel's parents, Josef and Anna. All four were found guilty of negligent homicide and sentenced to six months in prison, suspended with three years' probation.

The Catholic Church revised the Rite of Exorcism in January 1999, although the traditional Rite of Exorcism in Latin is allowed as an option. The act of exorcism is considered to be an incredibly dangerous spiritual task; the ritual assumes that possessed persons retain their free-will, though the demon may hold control over their physical body, and involves prayers, blessings, and invocations with the use of the document Of Exorcisms and Certain Supplications. Other formulas may have been used in the past, such as the Benedictine Vade retro satana. In the modern era, the Catholic Church authorizes exorcism rarely, approaching would-be cases with the presumption that mental or physical illness is in play. In mild cases the Chaplet of Saint Michael should be used.
