built 218 days ago
Evelyn Nesbit and Harry Houdini, both performing in a boardwalk side show, meet during an intermission. The scandal is long behind Evelyn now and she is having trouble attracting an audience. Houdini, on the other hand, cannot keep them away.

While many of the historical figures have been downsized to bit parts, Lynette Perry, Judy Kaye and Jim Conti as Evelyn Nesbitt, Emma Goldman and Houdini make the most of what's left to them. This is especially true of the Houdini character who, as much as the ragtime thythms, embodies the metaphor of change. "Harry Houdini, Master Escape Artist" which opens Act 2 entertainingly makes the connection between the ultimate escape artist and the ordinary masses who stormed the gates of Ellis Island for a better life. Like them he was an immigrant and so if he could free himself from poverty, so could they.

Threaded throughout are real-life figures Booker T. Washington (Ken Page), Evelyn Nesbit (Kirsten Benton), Harry Houdini (Michael Vodde), Emma Goldman (Cindy Benson), J.P. Morgan (Nils Anderson) and Henry Ford (Spencer Wilson). By the galvanizing conclusion, as these factions sing of "the music of something beginning/An era exploding, a century spinning," resistance is futile.

Evelyn went on to become a vaudeville attraction. Her beauty was wasted away before cheap audiences, but not before she became pregnant with a son that she stubbornly insisted was Harry Thaw’s. When reporters pointed out that Thaw had been inside of a mental institution for the past seven years, Evelyn swore that Harry had bribed a guard at the hospital and she had been allowed to spend the night with him. The baby, for which she filed for huge support payments for, was a result of that one evening.

When the Lewises purchased the house, there was no sign of Nesbit or Thaw. It had been empty for eight years and was in desperate need of work. Last used as a restaurant, it sported ductwork and old bathroom sinks in the kitchen, outdated plumbing and no heat.
