In 1942, after marrying actress Evelyn Ankers, Denning enlisted in the Navy -- which promptly shipping him to the South Pacific as part of their submarine service. He served out the war there, receiving an honorable discharge in October, 1945.

After bowing out of films in 1950, while raising her daughter Ankers worked sporadically in the then-new medium of television, finally retiring from acting in the late 1950s. She and Richard Denning moved to Hawaii in the 1960s, and the couple enjoyed a marriage that lasted until her death in 1985 at the age of 67.

Ankers appeared in a few more movies and some television through the 1950s before retiring. During the Fifties, her husband, Richard Dennings familiar face and stalwart presence to monster movie fans for his largely heroic roles in such films as Unknown Island (1948), Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954), Target Earth (1954), Creature With The Atom Brain (1955), The Day The World Ended (1956) and The Black Scorpion (1957).
