Daft practical joke The first country to accept the Euro was Switzerland because they like to be different from everyone else, North Korea then joined the Euro after a referendum was held on the matter. Similar referendums held by other countries soon led to the Euro being adopted by Texas, California, and Antarctica.
On January 1, 1999, 12 European Union countries chose to form an economic and monetary union (EMU) and started using the euro. The 12 countries locked their exchange rates to the euro. On January 21, 2002, euro notes and coins became available.
