Euphrates River: Middle East
built 209 days ago
Tell Banat is located on the left bank of the Euphrates River, Syria in an area known as “the middle Euphrates.” It contains remains of an extensive third millennium settlement as well as a smaller second millennium settlement. In fact the settlement is comprised of not one site, but four: the main urban mound comprised of Tell Banat and Tell (Jebel) Bazi; the satellite site of Tell Banat North, a burial mound built in three stages; Tell Kabir where a temple was located; and Tell Saghir. The Tigris-Euphrates river system is part of the Tigris-Euphrates alluvial salt marsh ecoregion of the Middle East, and is characterized by two large rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. The rivers have several small tributaries which feed into shallow freshwater lakes, swamps, and marshes, all surrounded by desert. The hydrology of these vast marshes is extremely important to the ecology of the entire upper Persian Gulf, in an area called the Cradle of Civilization due to its ancient history.
Ancient Egyptian society developed around the Nile River, which was geographically different from the Tigris and Euphrates — it was a much more navigable and predictable river. The Nile flooded regularly but predictably, as opposed to the Tigris and Euphrates, which had more erratic schedules and more dangerous floods. However, the Nile's flooding season meant that crops had to be planted on an exact timetable. Egypt, unlike Mesopotamia, was ... sitting in the middle of a desert, which made it much harder to attack. Egypt as a result was a much more peaceful society than ancient Mesopotamia.

The main sources of the Euphrates river flows in Turkey are found in the four tributaries, all of which originate at altitudes of about 3,000 m or more in the mountainous areas of eastern Turkey. Hydrological study was initiated in 1927-1929 by installing the first pluviometric stations in the basin of the Firat, the uppermost part of the Euphrates. Long-term records indicate an average annual precipitation of about 625 mm in the Keban basin, decreasing to approximately 415 mm in the lower Firat basin.
