Ethnic Cleansing

Ethnic Cleansing (2002) is a controversial computer game developed by Resistance Records, an underground music label specializing in Neo-Nazi and white supremacist bands. In the game, the protagonist (the player can choose either a skinhead or a Klansman) runs through a ghetto killing black people and Latinos, before descending into a subway system to kill Jews. Finally he reaches the "Jewish Control Center", where Ariel Sharon, former Prime Minister of Israel, is directing plans for world domination. The player must kill Sharon to win the game.
Ethnic Cleansing "Ethnic Cleansing" has become one of the key terms of the fin-de-siegrave;cle. In the former territory of Yugoslavia, along the fringes of the old Soviet Empire, and in Africa, whole populations are being murdered or forced from lands they have lived on for centuries. Andrew Bell-Fialkoff explains the history of this obscene practice, tracing it from antiquity to the present and showing how, in different times and places, the most varied criteria have been used to isolate and destroy previously accepted or even completely unnoticed groups. "Cleansing" has been based on race, gender, class, sexual preference, and religion and has been a constant evil in world history. The need to understand its reemergence in the wake of communism's collapse is at the center of this important book.

Ethnic cleansing is not a novelty for Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region as a whole. The Turkic invasion of Asia Minor and the Caucasus in the Middle Ages was accompanied by systematic massacres and the expulsion of Christian natives from their lands. Later, each phase of the development of Azeri national self-awareness, which started fermenting in the beginning of the 20th century and continues crystallizing to date, was similarly marked by pogroms directed against the indigenous Christian population of the Caspian. In 1918-1920, the leadership of the independent yet short-lived Azerbaijani Republic, with the help of expeditionary Turkish troops, attempted to annihilate the entire Armenian population of the Baku and Elizavetpol provinces of the former Russian Empire, including Nagorno Karabakh. In an attempt to execute their share of a pan-Turkist plan to craft an ethnically homogenous all-Turkic geopolitical belt that would stretch all the way from the Balkans to China, Azeris massacred an estimated 85,000 Armenian civilians.

If Iraq were to sink deeper into that kind of conflict, Baghdad and other cities could become caldrons of ethnic cleansing, bringing revenge violence from one region to another. Shiite populations in Lebanon, Kuwait and especially Saudi Arabia, where Shiites happen to live in the oil-rich eastern sector, could easily revolt. Such a regional conflict could take years to exhaust itself, and could force the redrawing of boundaries that themselves are less than 100 years old.

Earlier Wednesday in Ethiopia, Frazer said some of the violence in Kenya, which exploded after disputed elections last month and has claimed more than 800 lives, amounted to "ethnic cleansing" as it targeted members of certain tribes. She later explained her choice of words in a news conference.
Ethnic cleansing is a widely used euphemism for the murders, arrests, rapes, and expulsions of Bosnian citizens. The phrase is euphemistic because cleansing implies an activity that is harmless, ordinary, and even good. The analogy, which the phrase establishes... is perverse. Were the murders, arrests, rapes, and expulsions of Bosnian citizens a matter of cleansing? Were the murders, arrests, rapes, and expulsions of Bosnian citizens a matter of cleaning dirt out of an area? In what sense was this activity beneficial?
