In 1928 Emperor Haile Selassie made a treaty with Italy and Ethiopia got a free zone in the port of Assab. A road was to be build between Assab and Dese in Ethiopia.

The twentieth century has been one of turmoil for Ethiopia. Haile Selassie and co-regent Zauditu ruled from 1916 until Zauditu died in 1930. Selassie received the title of King in 1925 and of Emperor in 1930. Italian troops overpowered Ethiopia in 1935, but with the fall of Italy to the British Allies in 1941, Ethiopia was restored to freedom.

The 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) race, which draws 30,000 runners and is organized by distance great Haile Gebrselassie, had been scheduled for Sept. 9 — three days before Ethiopia rings in the third millennium. The race was moved to November.
