Ethernet: Ethernet Ip
built 631 days ago
Like the traditional PC expansion choices such as PCI and PCMCIA, Ethernet uses a Bus topology. This means that all the devices on the network share a single communication line. However, when looking at a bus like PCI, that communication line is the system's CPU, for Ethernet it is a LAN made up of many Ethernet enabled machines. Addressing on an Ethernet LAN is very similar to addressing on a PC, but rather then COM ports, MAC (Media Access Control) Addresses are used to identify the proper message recipient. And while a PC with PCI-based serial ports may use the RS-232 serial protocol to process data, the Ethernet bus uses networking protocols to govern data processing, the most popular of which is IP (Internet Protocol.

Ethernet transmits variable length frames from 72 to 1518 bytes in length, each containing a header with the addresses of the source and destination stations and a trailer that contains error correction data. Higher-level protocols, such as IP and IPX, fragment long messages into the frame size required by the Ethernet network being employed (see MTU).

[Image] When you're ready for the ultimate in communications speed from Windows CE try Ethernet. It allows you to connect to your LAN or the Internet at 10mb/s (Right now only the Linksys EtherFast and the Xircom CE3 are the only 100mb/s PC Card and the Abocol CFE-100 CompactFlash Card). This is done via an NDIS driver that is provided on the Windows CE Services CD for Handheld PC 2.0 and Palm-size PC 2.0 and 2.1 devices. The Handheld PC, Professional Edition, Handheld PC 2000 and Pocket PC have built-in NDIS NE 2000 drivers.. The features of Ethernet with Windows CE are ActiveSync, Backups (4 MB system takes less than 5 minutes!), copying software, software installation and other Internet Services such as Web browsing and E-Mail. FTP, Telnet, IRC, newsgroups etc are possible with additional software. Microsoft does not ship standard TCP/IP diagnostic programs with PC Companions. Please see the Network Utilities FAQ for a list of TCP/IP diagnostic programs such as Ping, Trace Route, NSLookup, etc.

In a Ethernet network, a system broadcasts the data using a Ethernet frame. The destination system is specified in the Ethernet frame using its Ethernet address. All the systems in the network listen for an Ethernet frame with their Ethernet address in it. When a system receives an Ethernet frame with its address in it, it processes the frame and sends it to the higher layers (like IP) for further processing.

The new tracker provides granular market data, including forecasts for key product types such as Ethernet microwave, Ethernet in the First Mile, and Ethernet-enabled base stations. It ... forecasts carrier requirements for features such as ATM, IP/MPLS, pseudowires, and native Ethernet switching through 2011. The quarterly tracking service also highlights key vendor wins in the Ethernet backhaul space and assesses the implications for vendor positioning, providing granular, global insight into this emerging market sector unavailable from other sources.

As networks migrate to Gigabit Ethernet, it will become essential for IP phones to operate at the same speed. This capability is especially critical in office environments where the IP phone resides between the network connection and the PC, and its integrated Ethernet switch (two external ports) supports both voice calls through the phone and data traffic to the PC using one Ethernet connection to each office. In this network configuration, the integrated switch in the IP phone dictates the speed of the network. If the network is operating at Gigabit Ethernet speeds, it becomes critical for the phone to ... support the GbE rate to prevent a bottleneck between the local area network (LAN) and the PC.
