Gigabit Ethernet uses either STP copper, UTP [CAT-5] copper, or fiber. The interface uses the Gigabit Interface Converter [GBIC]. The fiber versions may be called: 10Gbase-mc. Operates over fiber using one of three wavelengths; 850nm, 1300nm, or 1550nm. 'm' determines the wavelength, 'c' determines the coding.
Normally, a Ethernet network interface will pass a frame to the above network layers only if it is addressed to that interface. If the network interface is put in the promiscuous mode, the Ethernet network interface will send all the frames (frames addressed to any host in the network), regardless of their destination address to the above network layers. This mode is used by network analyzers to capture all the frames.

The Ethernet architecture consists of a single coaxial cable terminated at either end by a resistor having a value equal to the cable's characteristic impedance. Computers attach to the Ethernet through an interface known as a transceiver because it sends as well as receives bit streams represented as analog voltages.

Because Ethernet devices implement only the bottom two layers of the OSI protocol stack, they are typically implemented as network interface cards (NICs) that plug into the host device's motherboard. The different NICs are identified by a three-part product name that is based on the physical layer attributes.

As the Ethernet hardware filters the preamble, it is not given to Wireshark or any other application. Most Ethernet interfaces ... either don't supply the FCS to Wireshark or other applications, or aren't configured by their driver to do so; therefore, Wireshark will typically only be given the green fields, although on some platforms, with some interfaces, the FCS will be supplied on incoming packets.
