Ethernet: Ethernet Extender
built 631 days ago
Ethernet extenders are cost-effective alternatives to more complicated and pricey wiring installations such as CAT5 cable. Ethernet extenders are plug-and-play devices that you can install quickly to take advantage of existing copper twisted-pair network infrastructure. Depending on the required data rate, some Ethernet extender models can increase the distance of an Ethernet link extension beyond five miles.

Ethernet Extenders eliminate the need for installing expensive 802.3 repeaters, twisted pair (CAT5/CAT6) cabling, or fiber and associated fiber transceivers. Ethernet Extenders provide the most cost effective solutions for any LAN extension project, including Wireless Access Point installation, POE (Power over Ethernet), IP Security Camera and POS (Point of Sale) applications.

Ethernet extenders allow users to expand their Ethernet connections beyond the 328-foot (100-meter) Ethernet distance limitations. Ethernet extenders can establish long-range, high-speed data communication links between geographically separated LANs or LAN devices. Ethernet extenders are often employed to connect workgroups on different floors within a building.

Foundry's BigIron 10GBASE-SR modules transmitted 10-Gigabit Ethernet over 830 meters of randomly selected OFS LaserWave® 300 fiber through two optical connections, at 2.7 times the 802.3ae specified minimum for 10GBASE-SR links. "LaserWave and TrueWave RS provide margin to reliably support 10-Gigabit Ethernet using standard 802.3ae ports and eliminate the need for expensive link extenders for very long reach applications," said Janice Haber, Vice President of System Engineering and Market Development for OFS.

One solution to this distance issue and support POE at the same time is to use and Enable-IT 820 unpowered Ethernet extender. It was designed to carry Ethernet data over the standard 2-wire pairs (pins 1/2 and 3/6) and POE power over the spare pairs (pins 4/5 and 7/8). So they co-exist.
