Not only a true-blue Texan but one born in Austin, Ethan Hawke is the finest of the last major wave of young actors to achieve potential. Just 14 when he starred with River Phoenix in EXPLORERS (1985), he drew critical acclaim as Todd Anderson in DEAD POETS SOCIETY (1989), a role that revealed him as a formidable and memorable presence onscreen. In the 90s, Hawke branched out, directing videos (Lisa Loeb's Stay, 1994) and films (STRAIGHT TO ONE, 1994), and wrote two novels, THE HOTTEST STATE and ASH WEDNESDAY. He ... quietly bolstered his list of impressive acting credits: WHITE FANG (1991), A MIDNIGHT CLEAR (1992), ALIVE (1993), REALITY BITES (1994), GATTACA (1997), and TRAINING DAY (2002). Hawke's most successful actor-director collaborations have been with Richard Linklater in BEFORE SUNRISE (1995), THE NEWTON BOYS (1998), and WAKING LIFE (2001). Hawke and Linklater reunited with BEFORE SUNRISE star Julie Delpy for the scheduled for release in June 2004 BEFORE SUNSET.

Ethan Hawke was born November 1970 to teenage parents in Austin, Texas. After they split he travelled America with his mother for seven years before settling in New Jersey, The Garden State. A 14-year-old Ethan was spotted in a school production of Shaw's Saint Joan and cast alongside River Phoenix in kiddie adventure pic Explorers. He stayed at school before acting classes at Carnegie-Mellon led to the part of Todd Anderson in Dead Poets Society (1988), which turned him into a star. In his twenties Hawke gave up acting twice, once to study English and once to write a novel, The Hottest State. He is the cofounder of a New York theatre company and the director of no-narrative art film Chelsea Walls.

Ethan Hawke Ethan Hawke first appeared on stage when he was 13, in a high school production of St. Joan. He was 14 when he made his first movie, starring opposite River Phoenix in Explorers, about teen boys in outer-space. Four years later, he had his first mainstream exposure as a fragile boy in Dead Poets Society. His films are usually as serious as Hawke himself, including Alive: The Miracle of the Andes, Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, Gattaca, Snow Falling on Cedars, Training Day, and 2000's high-rise corporate-backstabbing Hamlet. He directed the starving-artist mood piece Chelsea Walls. Reality Bites was a rarity, a Hawke film that could arguably be called a comedy.

Ethan Hawke started out as a leading man for the slacker generation, mixing scruffy whiskers and leather jackets with a certain melancholy dignity. In the mid-1990s he starred opposite a bevy of up-and-coming actresses: with Winona Ryder in the slacker landmark Reality Bites (1994), with French star Julie Delpy in Richard Linklater's romance Before Sunrise (1995), with Uma Thurman in the futuristic DNA drama Gattaca (1997), and with Gwyneth Paltrow in a modern-era Great Expectations (1998). Hawke has since appeared in other Linklater movies, including The Newton Boys (1998), Waking Life (2001) and Before Sunset (2004). His other films include Snow Falling on Cedars (1999), Training Day (2001, with Denzel Washington) and Lord of War (1995, starring Nicolas Cage).
