Ethan Hawke: Newton Boys
built 238 days ago
Ethan Hawke photo Ethan Hawke's breakthrough role came at age 18 in Peter Weir's Dead Poet's Society in 1988, and the earnest, scruffy-faced actor quickly became the slacker generation's poster boy, thanks to additional films like Reality Bites and Before Sunrise. Most of the 20 movies he made in some 15 years were more romantic, thoughtful films (Great Expectations, Snow Falling on Cedars, Before Sunset), until what he calls his first "boy" movie, Training Day, which earned him an Oscar nod.

Hawke, 31, is sitting alone at the restaurant bar, smoking a cigarette and drinking a soda. Movie stars tend to shrink in real life and Ethan Hawke is no exception. He is a slightly built man, dressed down in jeans and a nondescript sports shirt, with straggly, uncombed hair, a wispy moustache and, yes, a goatee. What immediately strikes you about him is his openness. There is nothing guarded or pretentious about him. Rather, he bubbles with an engagingly boyish enthusiasm.

When Details magazine recently decided to do an editorial package on "Generation X: Ten Years Later," the editors chose, as their cover boy, Ethan Hawke. Along with Hawke, the cover listed such Gen-X memorabilia as Nirvana, Winona Ryder, goatees, Douglas Coupland, flannel, Pearl Jam, Courtney Love, Lollapalooza, Seattle, slackers, and Starbucks.
