Unfortunately, almost nobody saw Waterland, and the same could be said of Hawke's other film that year, the WWII drama A Midnight Clear. Lack of an audience obscured the actor's strong performances in both films, and it was not until 1994 that he began to gain recognition for something besides Dead Poets Society.

With a little help from his celebrity friends and the Manhattan-based digital filmmaking collective Indigent, Hawke was able to make a movie for $150,000 on digital video that would have cost a Hollywood studio millions of dollars to produce on film. Because of Indigent's readiness to enter into profit-sharing agreements, the company has attracted A-list talent to its otherwise low-budget projects.

Which was actually the reaction Hawke, 37 next week, was hoping to have when presented with the project. Hoffman was just coming off his 2005 Oscar win when he agreed to do the film with Lumet, a mutual hero of his and Hawke's.
