Erythromycin: Drugs
built 675 days ago
Erythromycin is an antibiotic that has been used for the past several decades. Erythromycin is a common, popular medication for certain infections caused by bacteria, including bronchitis, diphtheria, Legionnaires'' disease, pertussis (whooping cough), pneumonia, rheumatic fever, venereal disease (VD) and ear, intestine, lung, urinary tract and skin infections. Now, a new study raises concerns over the safety of erythromycin, especially when used in combination with certain drugs for infections and calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure.
Erythromycin may interact with other medications. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if other drugs your pet is receiving could interact with erythromycin. Such drugs include theophylline, digoxin, methylprednisolone and certain antibiotics.
Erythromycin is a common antibiotic drug that is used to treat a wide range of symptoms. A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine has shown the drug generally thought of as safe actually dramatically increases the risk of cardiac arrest.
Erythromycin should not be used with other drugs that bind the bacterial 50S ribosome or they will compete with each other and interfere with each other. Such other drugs include: clindamycin, lincomycin, chloramphenicol, azithromycin, and tylosin.
