Erythromycin: Antibiotics
built 521 days ago
Erythromycin is another antibacterial produced by a mold. There are a couple of new relatives of erythromycin (azithromycin and clarithromycin) that work the same way, but kill more bugs and have slightly fewer side effects. The erythromycin-like antibiotics are ... known as macrolides.

Erythromycin is effective in the therapy of Mycoplasma pneumonia; ... the micro-organism may persist in the respiratory tract despite adequate plasma concentrations of the antibiotic. In general erythromycin is less effective than tetracycline in eliminating the carrier state. In gonorrhoea, erythromycin is a suitable substitute for penicillin therapy.

Erythromycin is produced by a strain of Saccaropolyspora erythraea (formerlyStreptomyces erythraeus) and belongs to the macrolide group of antibiotics. It is basic and readily forms salts with acids but it is the base which is microbiologically active. Chemically, erythromicin is C37H67NO13.
