Eros has long been of particular interest to astronomers because it periodically comes closer to the earth than any other body of substantial size, with the exception of the moon. At times it comes as near as 22 million km (14 million mi). Because of this proximity, the gravitational field of the earth causes perturbations of the orbit of Eros, and extremely precise measures may be made of its position in the heavens. Before the introduction of radar, such measurements made possible accurate calculation of the distances between Eros, the earth, and the sun. During a close approach in 1931 an international effort was made to determine these distances (see Parallax). Observations were made at 36 places on 6 continents.
