He is most recognized for starring in the critically acclaimed HBO series, "Oz," which ran for six seasons and in which he played Warden Leo Glynn in the high-tech experimental unit of a maximum security prison. For this role, Hudson won the International Press Academy Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Series.

As a child growing up in Benton Harbour, Michigan, Ernie Hudson wrote short stories, poems and songs, always thinking that his words might one day come to life on stage. After a short stint in the Marine Corps, he moved to Detroit where he became the resident playwright at Concept East, the oldest Black theatre in the country. In addition, he enrolled at Wayne State University to further develop his writing and acting skills and found time to establish the Actors' Emsemble Theatre where he and other talented young black writers directed and appeared in their own works. After graduating with a B.A. from Wayne State, he was rewarded a full scholarship to the M.F.A. program at the prestigious Yale School of Drama. While performing with the school's repertory company, he was asked to appear in the Los Angeles production of Lonnie Elder's musical "Daddy Goodness," which led to his meeting Gordon Parks who gave Hudson the costarring role in his first feature film, "Leadbelly." Unfortunately, all that followed "Leadbelly" was a year of "bit parts and some harsh lessons about Hollywood," which led Hudson to enroll in another academic program at the University of Minnesota that would lead to a Ph.D. Through his experience, he learned another vital lesson: "there are those who spend their lives studying it and those who spend their lives doing it." Hudson definitely wanted to be in the second group.

Ernie Hudson was born on 17th December 1945 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, USA. He never knew his father and his mother, Maggie Donald, died of TB when he was just 4 years old. His grandmother, Arrana Donald, raised him. He has a half-brother, Lewis Hudson. For some time he was in the Marine Corps then he moved to Detroit where he started writing plays for the Concept East theatre company....

Hudson's pragmatic and optimistic attitude ... pervades his views on African Americans in the entertainment industry. He cites well-known and respected African-American directors such as Spike Lee and John Singleton, as well as quality films dealing with African-American lives such as "Eve's Bayou," "Tuskegee Airmen" and "Miss Ever's Boys." Hudson recalls the nonexistence of such directors and films just 10 to 15 years ago.
