Bertarelli won't use that money to make splashy acquisitions. Instead, he's plotting a slower, more methodical course. To increase U.S. sales to 60% of total revenues in five years, from 35% now, he'll use the cash on Serono's books to strike up innovative biotech collaborations. One example: a $52 million codevelopment deal with Seattle-based ZymoGenetics Inc. (ZGEN ) in September. Their goal is to develop drugs against autoimmune diseases based on two proteins discovered by the American partner--molecules involved in the overproduction of antibodies that attack the body's own cells in diseases such as multiple sclerosis and lupus. "We can be a bridge for biotech in Europe, but our future is in the U.S.," says the CEO.
"Moving forward, Serono will invest in its existing businesses and will actively pursue opportunities for growth through acquisitions," said Ernesto Bertarelli, Chief Executive Officer. "I take this opportunity to thank our employees for their loyalty and commitment to Serono."

"As the originator of Rebif(R), a current reference treatment for multiple sclerosis, Serono has a long-term commitment to patients with multiple sclerosis," said Ernesto Bertarelli, CEO of Serono. "This is a major step in the development of the first oral disease modifying treatment for multiple sclerosis."
Ernesto is, in fact, a true citizen of the world: a global manager and leader. He cares deeply about international issues and opportunities to combat health problems globally with innovative products that treat infertility, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, and growth disorders.

For it is not just the winning that drives on Ernesto Bertarelli, he ... loves the taking part. Which is why he has been the on-board navigator and why, also, he shows untrammelled joy in victory. Emotionally, his Italian ancestry comes through loud and clear.
