Ernesto Bertarelli: Swiss Alinghi
built 654 days ago
Bertarelli was the only Swiss aboard Alinghi on Tuesday — and even he was born in Italy. The rest of the winning team was made up of six New Zealanders, three Americans, two Italians, and one each from Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, and Spain.
Despite his Hollywood looks, penchant for fast boats and $9 billion net worth, no one calls Ernesto Bertarelli a playboy. When he took the helm of the Swiss drugmaker Serono from his ailing father in 1996, Bertarelli was just 31, the youngest CEO in the company's 94-year history. Since then he has piloted Serono with the same vigor he does his champion speedboats, putting the company on a true course to global expansion.
Watkins's new boss will be Ernesto Bertarelli, the former chief executive of the Swiss biotechnology Serono, who sold the company to Germany's Merck last year for an impressive $13.3bn. Bertarelli is estimated to be worth about $8.8bn.

It was this recipe that Bertarelli would apply to his conquest of the America's Cup, magnificently won with Alinghi, on March 2nd, 2003, by defeating Team New Zealand who had held the trophy since 1995. With the win, Bertarelli had realised his childhood dream, all the while balancing the needs of his company, and the Alinghi syndicate.

Born in Rome, Bertarelli was CEO and Deputy Chairman of Serono, a Swiss biotechnology company he inherited from his father. Serono was sold to Merck KGaA of Germany in September 2006 for US$13.3 billion, forming a new company Merck-Serono.
