Ernesto Bertarelli: America's Cup
built 654 days ago
While Serono's scientists hunker down in the lab, Bertarelli is preparing for a different kind of challenge. A lifelong sailor who practices whenever he can on Lake Geneva, Bertarelli has launched a $70 million Swiss bid for the 2003 America's Cup in New Zealand. Bertarelli, who hopes to be on board, is quick to point out that the funding is coming from himself and a handful of corporate partners. But if Bertarelli is to fulfill his dream of taking part, he needs to make sure it's smooth sailing for Serono in the months to come.
During the press conference, both Ellison and Bertarelli acknowledged that their boats were in tip-top shape, and they had plenty of great sails. Speaking on behalf of Oracle BMW, Dickson said they had an almost entirely new team from the one in New Zealand, and that Gavin Brady will be the helmsman with John Kostecki ... in the back of the boat. On the contrary, Bertarelli said that the Alinghi team is almost the same one as won the America's Cup, except that Schuemann rather than Russell Coutts will be driving.

Alinghi is a coined name of the syndicate set up by Ernesto Bertarelli to challenge for the America's Cup. Bertarelli had raced several smaller yachts named Alinghi previously, but 2003 was his first attempt at the America's Cup. Alinghi successfully challenged for and won the 2003 America's Cup in Auckland New Zealand and successfully defended at the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia, Spain.
Landing in Geneva, on March 8th, 2003, was a very emotional moment for Ernesto Bertarelli. As he descended from the plane which had carried his team from New Zealand with the America's Cup he said, "I so often dreamed to land here, with this trophy in my hands, that I feel I am living an almost unreal moment, and if I have succeeded, it is due to the work of a lot of people." The win was all the more exceptional as it came on his first attempt at the Cup. Alinghi was bringing the America's Cup to Europe for the first time since it had left Britain in 1851.

From the Sport Telegraph: "Team New Zealand chief Grant Dalton has sent a compensation demand to Alinghi owner Ernesto Bertarelli for the postponement of the America's Cup in 2009. The demand came just 24 hours before Justice Herman Cahn, of the New York Supreme Court, found against the Swiss businessman and in favour of Larry Ellison's Golden Gate Yacht Club in San Francisco."

In 2001 Bertarelli launched his campaign to win the America's Cup. His Alinghi team, which is registered with the Geneva Nautical Society, clinched the trophy from defenders Team New Zealand in 2003 in Auckland.
