Map of Eritrea The most recent addition to the nationalities of Eritrea is the Rashaida. The Rashaida came to Eritrea in the 19th century[51] from the Arabian Coast. The Rashaida do not typically intermarry, are typically nomadic, and number approximately 61,000, less than 1% of the population.
Australian males who hold Eritrean citizenship may be required to undertake military service upon their return to Eritrea. Prior to travel, Eritrean/Australian dual nationals should seek advice from the nearest Embassy or Consulate of Eritrea.
Though Eritrea’s actions may seem marginal at first, there are in fact major implications for American national security. Eritrea’s supply of weapons provides a major tool for the Islamic Courts Union in its campaign to unseat the delicate interim government. If the instability and violence continues, Somalia will remain a failed state, and as Afghanistan showed, failed states in which Islamist forces are free to operate can directly impact the United States. Additionally, a significant American military presence has been established in Djibouti, a tiny nation sandwiched between Somalia and Eritrea. In January of this year, a number of al-Qaeda members were targeted in air strikes by American military forces based in Djibouti. These members of the terrorist organization had been sheltered by the Islamic Courts Union.
When you apply for a visa to Eritrea, you must do it at an Eritrean Embassy in - or acredited to - the country where you are a citizen and nowhere else. There are Eritrean Embassies in Europe: London, Paris, Brussels, The Hague, Berlin, Rome, Stockholm and Moscow. There are ... consulates in Athens, Milan, Franfurt and Geneva. If you come from a European country without an Eritrea mission, you can contact the Eritrean Embassy in Brussels. Nationals of Central Asian countries are served by the Embassy in Moscow. Eritrean Embassies serving the Americas are in Washington DC and Ottawa.

When the United Nation federated Eritrea with Ethiopia in 1952, the 1902 line became irrelevant. Ras Mengesha, the Tigrayan ruler, paid very little attention to it, developing agricultural settlements administered by the Tigrayan district of Shire on both sides of the border. Since then, the area has been periodically disputed. In 1976 and 1981, for example, it was the scene of clashes between the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) and the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
