Eritrea: Italian Somalia

Eritrea's two main ethnic groups are the Tigrigna, which forms about half of the population, and the Tigre and Kunama, which amount to 40%. The remaining people are the Afar, Bilen, Nara, Rashaida, Hidarb, and Saho. The local Tigrignan and the wider Arabic language are the two predominant languages for official purposes, but Amharic languages as well as English and Italian are ... spoken.
Eritrea helped supply Mr. Aideed's fighters with weapons and training, and the OLF made raids on Ethiopia from their Somali bases. In retaliation, Ethiopia earlier this year sent some of its forces into southern Somalia to support groups hostile to Mr. Aideed.
Before the advent of the Italians at the end of the 19th century, the history of Eritrea is characterized by the domination of various powers, such as the Turks and Egyptians. From 1557, the Massawa coastal area was under the rule of the Ottomans until the Egyptians took possession in 1865. The Italians took it in 1889 when they formally declared Eritrea as their colony. The Italian rule lasted till 1941.

[T]he Italians consolidated their possessions into one colony, henceforth known as Eritrea, territory of Italy as of New Years Day 1890. The Kingdom of Italy ruled Eritrea from 1890 to 1940. In 1936, Mussolini created the Italian Empire (Italian East Africa), with the union of Eritrea, Ethiopia and Italian Somalia. Eritrea enjoyed considerable industrialization and development of modern infrastructure during Italian rule (such as roads and the Eritrean Railway).
Owing to its colonial history, Italian food is abundant albeit not too varied all across Eritrea. You will always find a restaurant that serves quite good pasta, lasagna, steak, grilled fish etc.
