Eritrea's largely agricultural economy was devastated by its 30-year-long indepedence war with Ethiopia and hurt again by the strain of the 1998-2000 border war. Some 80% of the population is involved in farming and herding, although this sector provides less than 10% of the country's GDP. Eritrea's agricultural products include sorghum, lentils, vegetables, corn, cotton, tobacco, and sisal. Cattle, sheep, goats, and camels are raised, and hides are produced. There is a fishing industry and some pearl fisheries remain in the Dahlak Archipelago. The country's natural resources include gold, potash, zinc, copper, and salt, but they have not yet been exploited.
After decades of pouring arms into the region, future U.S. policy toward Eritrea should be based upon a sustained commitment to reconstruction. During their liberation struggle, the Eritreans demonstrated the capacity to design and implement their own relief and development programs, and the country has the potential to become a model of efficient, self-reliant development. Washington should facilitate Asmara’s efforts through direct, bilateral government-to-government assistance to rebuild and develop the country's roads, bridges, railroads, communications, and power-generation capacity.

The most common beverage in Eritrea is by far Beer. There is only one (state-owned) brand in the country so there is not much choice, but it is quite good at that. Beer is consumed cold in Eritrea! This is closely followed by various soft drinks, the most common flavors are as elsewhere in the world: orange flavor, lemon/lime flavor and cola flavor, produced by one of the most recognizable brands in the world. The same company that holds the beer monopoly ... holds the monopoly on producing the local form of sambouca colloquially called "Araqi" as well as Vermouth and other spirits. International brands of the same spirits as well as others and are also readily available at most bars for a cheap price.

As if the Horn of Africa didn't already have enough problems, now Eritrea, which had relatively friendly relations with the United States when it first gained independence from Ethiopia in 1991, is looking ever more like a state sponsor of terrorism. No state has been officially labeled with that designation since the Sudan--which shares a border with Eritrea--back in 1993, not long after that country sponsored a conference that boasted representatives from Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, Saddam's Baath party, and the Islamic Republic of Iran among other distinguished guests (not to imply that Saddam's secular Iraq had any connection with terrorism). But Eritrea has become increasingly hostile to American interests in East Africa and it has done so most recently by supporting Somalia's al Qaeda affiliated Islamic Courts Union.
The respect of the people of Eritrea towards these thousands of best and chosen citizens is indeed incalculable. These fighters have defeated the bitter struggle so named ‘insurmountable' through a steadfast moral and unparalleled determination. These conscious and bold citizens, who are crown of the society, chose to express their love for their people by giving their own life. Those who love their people are twice as much loved by the people. Hence, martyrs are remembered with great enthusiasm and tenderness. The existence of the people and country of Eritrea is based on their martyrdom, while the special and very distinguished national history of Eritreans is built by their achievement.
In 2006, Eritrea announced it would become the first country in the world to turn its entire coast into an environmentally protected zone. The 1 347 km (837 mile) coastline, along with another 1 946 km (1,209-miles) of coast around its more than 350 islands, will come under governmental protection.
