Eritrea's only international airport at present is in the capital Asmara. Lufthansa is the most reliable airline flying 3 times a week into Asmara from Frankfurt. Eritrean Airlines flies twice weekly to/from Frankfurt, Dubai and Djibouti and once weekly to/from Rome and Jeddah. Egyptair serves Asmara twice weekly from Cairo. Yemenia Air fly twice weekly from Sanaa. Saudi Arabian Airlines fly twice weekly from Jeddah/Riyadh.

The population of Eritrea is about 4.5 million. About 0.5 million of these live in Asmara. People from Eritrea are called Eritreans. Most of them speak Tigrinya or Arabic as their first language, but some speak English or other languages.

By mid 1976, began the launching of the ‘Peasant Army’ offensive against Eritrea. The Eritrean guerrilla forces (estimated to number 20, 000) managed to win considerable victories against the occupying Ethiopians. The EPLF laid siege to Nacfa in September 1976. In 1977 they took Korora, Afabet, Elabered, Keren and Decemhare. They ... surrounded Asmara, Eritrea’s capital and organized the escape of 1,000political prisoners from Asmara’s jail. The ELF took Tessenei, Agordat and Mendefera. By the end of 1977, mainland Massawa was in the hands of the EPLF, which now had captured tanks and armored vehicles.

Medical facilities in Eritrea are extremely limited, particularly outside the capital, Asmara. Medicines are often unavailable and can be extremely expensive. In the event of a serious illness or accident, medical evacuation (at considerable expense) to a destination with appropriate facilities would be necessary.

Asmara (Asmera), Eritrea's capital is situated on the eastern edge of Eritrea's highland plateau. Asmara enjoys a great climate, clean and picturesque streets, attractive palm trees, and a reputation as one of the safest, calm and alluring capital cities in Africa. The name is derived from Arbaete Asmara which literally means, in the Tigrinya language, "the four (villages) are united".
