Eric Schmidt: People

Now, Schmidt says he will ''focus, focus, focus'' on networking. The linchpin of his comeback plan is the directory technology that is built into Novell's NetWare 4 software (recently rechristened IntranetWare). Think of the directory as a master list of all the people authorized to use a network and its attached devices. Employees have to sign in only once to access printers, programs, and data, and network managers need to maintain only one central list. Without a directory, moving someone even from one part of a building to another can require updating dozens of different files.

Schmidt recalled several cases of what he called "crazy people" who have been using Google search to plan and carry out all manner of nefarious deeds, from murders to suicide to stalking. He emphasized repeatedly that there is no way to stop bad people from doing bad stuff using search, but that Google is doing all they can to make it a safe environment for users. Schmidt ... pointed out how Google makes it easy for users to remove their phone numbers from the Google search results. (Story for another time, but not so easy, and why is it accessible at all?).

Schmidt discusses Google Universal Search and its blending of different sorts of results on one page, and says that people love it. It's an example of augmented presentation. And iGoogle presentation is tremendously successful. He says that iGoogle extends to non-PC and non-Mac platforms, such as phones. "And that's pretty exciting."

Schmidt is one of the few people who have become a billionaire (USD) based on stock options received as an employee in a corporation of which neither he nor a relative was the founder. "Earlier this year, he pulled in almost $90 million from sales of Google stock and made at least another $50 million selling shares in the past two months as the stock leaped to more than $300 a share."[6] In its 2006 'World's Richest People' list, Forbes ranked Schmidt as the 129th richest person in the world (the ranking was shared by Onsi Sawiris, Alexei Kuzmichov, and Robert Rowling) with an estimated wealth of $6.2billion.

Schmidt: The catalog search is a good example of a new service, because it was done in six months by two people. Because Google already has the infrastructure, it's relatively easy to add new services.
