The early chapters, in which Clapton discusses his childhood in rural England in the late 1940s and through the '50s, are the richest. From whispered conversations among relatives, young Eric pieced together that his mother and father were actually his grandparents. His mother had given birth out of wedlock and left him in their care. She told him when he was 9 that he couldn't call her Mummy and that she didn't want to be part of his life.

Clapton was born in March of 1945, at the dreg ends of World War II, in the town of Shipley in England. His mother had been a girl of 15 when she got pregnant by a Canadian serviceman who shipped out to the war before he was born and returned home to Canada when it was finished.

With the Bluesbreakers, Clapton cut a romantic, mysterious figure-playing endless screaming solos as though he were oblivious to the world outside, an artist alone with his muse. His growing cult following mistook his gift as something akin to the second coming of Christ, and "Clapton Is God" was seen scrawled on buildings, tube stations, and bathroom walls all over England.
Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, England the son of 16 year old Patricia Molly Clapton and Edward Walter Fryer, a 24-year-old soldier from Montréal, Canada; the two were not married. Fryer shipped off to war prior to Clapton's birth and then returned to Canada.
